Let Us Give Thanks

November 17th, 2009

Thanksgiving…hmmmm….seems it used to be a totally separate holiday from Christmas when I was younger.  Now the two holidays run together with Christmas items being put in the stores even before Halloween gets done.  I don’t know about your town, but in ours, the Christmas lights were cut on over a week ago.  Now I do so love Christmas lights but Thanksgiving is getting a bum deal.

For us, and I hope you too, Thanksgiving is about family.  I may not see my family members, even those that live close by, very often throughout the year.  Some I see more often than others but on this one day of the year we all come together to remember, laugh, love and eat.  It’s a tradition.

We have always eaten at the same place.  There use to be a table for the grown-ups and one for the kids.  We couldn’t wait to get old enough to eat at the big table.  We were picky and didn’t eat things that had green squishy chunks or onions.  Then one day we arrived and there was no table for kids and we all ate the dressing in spite of the green chunks and liked it!  Soon there were more kids but they were included and the kid table went be the wayside.  Then those kids had kids.  More dishes were introduced and the menu grew.  I could hear the younger group telling which dishes had green things that they did not want on their plate.

We started with a group of 16 and now our family group consists of 36.  This is something for which to be so thankful.  This year we will start a new tradition as we will gather at a different place due to the loss of my dearly beloved aunt.  It will be different and there will be a sadness especially among those of us who use to sit at the card table.  And we will remember, laugh, love and eat.

God bless our family and yours at this special time of the year.

Countdown to Halloween

September 26th, 2009

I like all holidays but Halloween if done properly is especially fun.  I use to love to dress like a witch, play scarey music, and leave the door open then jump out with a witch’s laugh as they approached the door.  Some ran and didn’t come back, some ran just a short ways and came back, and many slung their candy all over the yard as they ran.  OK I still love it and have some of the greatest masks for this.

Kids don’t get to trick or treat quite like they use to in the old days but they still need a goodie bag or treat bag whether they go to a Halloween carnival or trick or treat in a safe neighborhood.  Zazzle is full of some of the cutest tote bags that can be used for trick or treating.  They can be washed, put away and used for many years.  They will take up less space in the closet too.  You can personalize them with a child’s name or an event name.  They make cute handbags also.

I have featured some of my favorites but there are many to choose from:

Back to School

August 18th, 2009

Well it is officially “back to school” time now.  Supplies have been bought, half days are over, homework has begun and notification has been given that too much talking is going on.  It is a lot on the mom to remember all the deadlines for fund raisers, projects, tests, trips, etc. but teachers are the really special ones to do all they do each and every day.  So kudos to the teachers out there and remember you are appreciated!

Here are some gift ideas for your teacher to let he or she know they are truly special.  Customize with your teacher’s name and you will have a personalized gift that is unique.
